Music in the Mountains 2025: This Summer's Festival Lineup & What to Know
Music in the Mountains 2025 is back for another summer of world-class performances set against one of the most beautiful backdrops in the country. If you're planning a Durango trip this summer, check the festival dates — adding a concert to your itinerary is one of the best ways to experience the town's cultural side.
The 2025 Festival
Running from late June through early August 2025, Music in the Mountains brings professional musicians from around the country to Durango. The programming spans full Festival Orchestra performances (70+ musicians), chamber music ensembles, jazz evenings, and family-friendly concerts designed for all ages.
The festival has been running since 1987 and has built a reputation for excellent musicianship, accessible programming, and stunning venues. Many of the musicians are principals and section leaders from major symphony orchestras — you're getting world-class talent in a mountain-town setting.
The Setting
The mainstage venue is the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, a modern, acoustically excellent space that seats around 600. Chamber concerts and special events are held at venues like the Glacier Club (a stunning mountain setting north of town) and smaller intimate spaces around Durango.
The outdoor venue concerts are what set this festival apart. Watching the sun set behind the La Plata Mountains while listening to live orchestral music is an experience that's hard to match anywhere. The combination of mountain air, alpine light, and excellent musicianship creates something memorable.
2025 Schedule & Tickets
Check the official festival website at musicinthemountains.com for the full 2025 schedule and ticket information. Concerts typically run multiple nights per week throughout the festival period, with performances on weekends and select weeknights.
Tickets range from $30 to $75 depending on venue and seating, with discounts for students and multi-concert packages available. Popular concerts sell out, so book early if you have specific dates in mind.
What to Bring & Know
Weather
Outdoor concerts may be affected by weather — Durango's summer weather is generally excellent, but afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Most storms clear by evening, but bring layers and be prepared for cooler temperatures once the sun sets. A light jacket or fleece is smart for evening concerts.
Dress Code
Casual mountain-town attire is fine. Jeans and a button-down work for indoor concerts. No need for formal wear — the vibe is relaxed and welcoming.
Parking
Parking at Fort Lewis College is free and ample. For downtown chamber concerts, street parking and public lots are available (and free after 6pm).
Pair It with a Durango Summer Trip
Music in the Mountains pairs beautifully with everything else Durango offers in summer. Hike the trails around Horse Gulch or Animas Mountain in the morning, grab lunch at Zia Taqueria or Homeslice Pizza, explore downtown shops and galleries in the afternoon, then catch a concert in the evening.
Raft the Animas River with Mountain Waters Rafting one day, mountain bike the Hermosa Creek Trail another day, and attend a Festival Orchestra performance that night. Durango in July is peak season — long days, warm weather, wildflowers blooming at high elevation, and a full calendar of activities.
Add the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a day trip to Mesa Verde, or a drive up the Million Dollar Highway, and you have a week-long itinerary that combines outdoor adventure with cultural experiences.
Where to Stay: Timberline & Basecamp
Our townhome Timberline (122 Ski Home) is right across from Purgatory Resort, about 25 miles north of Durango — a 30-minute scenic drive to Fort Lewis College for concerts. It sleeps six with three bedrooms, a hot tub, and a fireplace. Basecamp (110 Door2Lift) sleeps eight with four bedrooms, a hot tub, and a pool table.
Both properties are in the mountains, so you get quiet evenings and mountain views, but you're close enough to Durango to make evening concerts convenient. After a concert, the drive back to Purgatory is peaceful — no traffic, just mountain roads under the stars.
